Details: | Can’t Stop The Space Pirates Presented by the Arizona Browncoats and the Arizona Corsairs Sponsored by MADCAP Theaters and Bookmans Entertainment Exchange On September 19th, 2010 (“Talk Like A Pirate” Day), join the Arizona Corsairs and the Arizona Browncoats for a charity event like you've never seen. For five years the Arizona Browncoats have been presenting Can't Stop The Serenity, bringing in nearly $40,000 for Equality Now and local charities. This year, the event has been expanded to include both Serenity (2005) and The Ice Pirates (1984), along with Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (2008) for good measure. But that's not all. Musical guests Thunder Stump (a local comedy punk band) and Unwoman (a steampunk cellist with haunting vocals from San Francisco) will be performing live, as well as sword fight demonstrations, belly dancing, merch and home-made crafts for sale, an epic prize drawing, an appearance by the Arizona Ninja Association, and a few more surprises. The opening act gets underway at 12pm and the event will run until 7pm. Featuring Visit azbrowncoats.org/csts/phoenix for more details. |

Details: | Ghost Bird - September Saturday 18 (4, 6, 8pm) & Sunday 19 (2, 4, 6pm) $8 Ghost Bird (2009) Set in a murky swamp overrun with birders, scientists, and reporters, Ghost Bird explores the limits of certainty, the seductive power of hope, and how one phantom woodpecker changed a sleepy Southern town forever. In 2005, scientists announced that the Ivory-billed woodpecker, a species thought to be extinct for 60 years, had been found in the swamps of Eastern Arkansas. Other creatures have wrongly been presumed extinct, but the reappearance of the Ivory-bill was celebrated around the world as the rediscovery of a lifetime, prompting the largest recovery effort ever undertaken for a lost species. Millions of dollars poured in from the government while ornithologists and birders flooded the swamps to find the rare bird. |
